Surfing In Portugal

For this week's Behind the Photo, I decided to choose to tell the story of when I learned how to surf. First, I need to back up a little bit and tell you about Couchsurfing. I left the US to go traveling for an indefinite amount of time with absolutely no plan of where I was going or what I would do when I got there. Before I left, my more experienced traveler friends told me about this amazing community around the world called Couchsurfing.

The Caves Of Cappadocia

Shortly after I moved to Seattle, in 2010, I traveled to Turkey for the first time. While I was there, I went to Ephesus, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Istanbul, and Cappadocia (not in that order). I completely fell in love with the culture, the people, and the country. It's so beautiful with so many warm, friendly, and open people.

A Spanish BBQ

Last summer, I spent about 6 weeks on the island of Mallorca, Spain. The first 3 weeks I was living in a town called Magaluf which was the worst place I have ever been to, so we'll skip that part. The last 3 weeks I spent living in Palma with a couple of people I met through Couchsurfing. They were so kind in allowing me to stay for so long while I was looking for a job and trying to figure out where my next stop should be. I absolutely loved Palma!

Shave and A Haircut

For my first story “Behind the Photos”, I chose an image I call "Shave And A Haircut". This photo was taken while I was traveling in Skopje, Macedonia with a friend, Josh, whom I met at a hostel in Hungary.
